On my way to B&Q the other day, because nothing says “wild Sunday” like browsing decking screws, I passed the local abattoir and was greeted by a familiar sight. A cluster of bobble-hatted animal activists stood at the gates, clutching placards, eyes blazing with purpose, enthusiastically encouraging passing motorists to beep their horns in solidarity. To be fair, the response from traffic was at best underwhelming. A polite ripple rather than a revolution shall we say! Now, before anyone reaches for their reusable tote bag to throw at me, let me say this: I’m a firm believer in freedom of speech and the right to protest. If you feel strongly about something, you absolutely should say so. That’s the beauty of living where we do (At the moment, hope Starmer & Swinney are not about!) But it did make me wonder — what exactly is the endgame here? Is the protest about how animals are slaughtered? Or is it about the fact that they’re slaughtered at all? Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: humans are omnivores. We have been for a very, very long time. You can debate the ethics (and many rightly do), but you can’t really debate the biology. One whiff of a smoked bacon sandwich has been known to cause even the most committed broccoli enthusiast to wobble. It’s practically a scientific phenomenon. That said, modern slaughter methods in the UK and EU are heavily regulated. There are strict welfare standards, inspections, and serious penalties for breaches. And then there’s the wider question: what about the rest of the animal kingdom? Lions, tigers, hyenas — none of them host panel discussions before dinner. The antelope doesn’t receive counselling. Nature is not renowned for its gentle touch. Imagine trying to persuade a pride of lions to swap zebra for quinoa. “Have you considered lentils?” you’d shout across the savannah, waving a placard while they consider you in a very different way. If we forced carnivores to eat grass and berries, extinction would likely follow. Why? Because meat-eating isn’t just a lifestyle choice for them, it’s hardwired into their genetics. Which brings us back to the protestors outside the abattoir. Passion is admirable. Conviction is admirable. But if the argument is that no creature should eat another creature, then the debate isn’t just with farmers and butchers — it’s with evolution itself. Part of me can’t help but imagine a group trip of activists to the African savannah, placards held high and chanting at a pack of hyenas: “Meat is murder!” I’d pay to watch that very short documentary, while eating a burger!
