I’ve been in sales for over 35 years now, and I must say I have enjoyed every minute of my time with my customers, promoting new products, finding better solutions than my competitors to make or save our customers money. However not every salesperson understands what sales or selling is all about.
Now sales in my opinion on the whole get a bad rap, as if you think about it, we would still be on the square wheel without someone showing us something new, but trades like used cars and double-glazing have somewhat tarnished the reputation of the art of selling with their pressure tactics and funnel selling. This type of selling chose to chase the money and the “one-hit” sale, and not the long-term relationship with the customer, which would reap much more sales long term with repeat business and referrals. Lying to get that “Sale” over the line has never been a good idea, leading to bad reputations and service. But not selling can be just as bad, as poor salespeople, who just want to gossip or talk about the weather, just take up your valuable time, which can be better used attending to your customers.
I have always prided myself on providing a service, not a sale, and see every liaison with a customer as a way of increasing their wealth and profit, and in turn over time, increasing mine; a sort of “Win-win” so to speak.
So if you ever see me walking into your premises, know this; I am there to make you money or save you money, not to waste your time. However, next time if someone in sales comes into your shop or business, and hasn’t prepared themselves to make you or save you money, show them the door, fast.
